🎯 What we'll chat about:

Can one university system tackle digital accessibility across 12 campuses without duplicating effort at every turn? The University System of Maryland (USM) set out to answer that question, and built a coordinated, cross-campus ecosystem to do it.

In this session, presenters Jennifer E. Potter, Ph.D. will share how USM turned a 12-campus system into a dynamic community of shared expertise, resources, and programming. Rather than treating accessibility as an IT add-on, USM shifted the work to be everyone's responsibility, accelerating gap identification, elevating shared concerns, and addressing each discipline's unique challenges along the way.

You'll leave with a practical roadmap to draft the core elements of a digital accessibility ecosystem tailored to your institution.

You'll hear about:

  • How to build a coordinated accessibility ecosystem across campuses with different levels of expertise and bandwidth.
  • The framework behind USM's approach, including the Six Essential Steps of Digital Accessibility (Headings, Links, Color & Contrast, Images, Tables, Media) and how it turns technical WCAG standards into common-language, actionable guidance.
  • Core elements and lessons learned from a multi-pronged initiative that you can adapt for your own institution.
  • How to strengthen accessible course design from the outset, maximizing limited resources and reducing duplication so students get a consistent, accessible experience.
  • How to identify your own stakeholder collaborators and draft the beginnings of your institution's accessibility ecosystem.
