The Future of Accessibility Just Got Rewritten: Day 1 Accessibility Forum Insights

Written by Sarah Howorth | Sep 24, 2025 1:43:11 PM

Day 1 of our Australian Accessibility Innovation Forum brought together over 20 higher education institutions for something truly collaborative. They didn't just talk—they co-designinged the way forward. Real insights. Bold challenges. Breakthrough thinking that's already changing how accessibility works. We also explored how Symplicity Access is enabling this transformation in disability services.

Four thoughtful sessions explored how institutions across Australia, New Zealand, and beyond are reimagining what's possible.

Global Perspectives & Strategic Thinking

We opened with insights from institutions worldwide, exploring how accessibility is evolving from compliance-focused to strategically central. The conversations touched on innovative approaches to staff efficiency, student retention initiatives, and the growing recognition that accessibility leadership can be a genuine competitive advantage.

Building Fair & Scalable Frameworks

QUT and the University of Melbourne shared their approaches to creating consistency at scale. The discussions centered on evidence-based decision-making, tiered support models, and the shift toward "inclusion by default" thinking. These weren't theoretical concepts—they were practical frameworks being implemented right now.

Faculty Engagement & Sustainable Systems

UNSW, University of Auckland, and University of Otago demonstrated different approaches to scaling support while maintaining quality. From streamlined processes to faculty portals that shift responsibility appropriately, the focus was on systems that actually work for everyone involved—students, staff, and academics.

Future-Facing Innovation

ANU, Swinburne, and University of Wollongong explored what's next. Strengths-based approaches, structured workflows, and thoughtful automation were key themes. The conversations touched on how technology—including AI—might enhance rather than replace human-centered support.

What Emerged

The day revealed institutions grappling with similar challenges but finding uniquely creative solutions. Accessibility is increasingly seen as strategic rather than simply operational. The focus has shifted to sustainable frameworks, meaningful faculty engagement, and innovation that serves both efficiency and impact.

And now, attendees have a community to lean on while navigating this new landscape of accessibility.
