How CareerHub integrated all career readiness offerings at City, University of London

In the heart of London, City St George's , University of London (City) is a public research university home to 20,000 students. City is one of the UK’s most diverse universities, supporting students from around the globe and lower socioeconomic backgrounds. “We are proud to be very focused on social mobility at City,” said Gemma Kenyon, Director of Careers and Employability. At City, “employability is at the heart of what we do,” Kenyon says. To support this mission, City has been utilising Symplicity’s CareerHub for over 10 years to manage all aspects of career readiness. The platform has enabled the university to consolidate and organise its extensive extracurricular offerings, comprising 40 staff members across different teams, into a single, easily navigable space for students.

Why Symplicity CareerHub?

During the decision-making process, City sought a solution that would enhance efficiency, organisation and provide comprehensive data tracking all in one place. The platform's ability to centralise and report on student engagement data was particularly crucial, as it allowed the university to make informed decisions about resource allocation and service planning.

CareerHub eliminates manual processes, allowing City to offer employers a user-friendly platform for posting vacancies, for staff to run events and increase direct communication with students. This seamless experience contributes to improved graduate outcomes for City University. Kenyon summarises, "CareerHub empowers us to be a strong partner for both students and employers. We're very happy with Symplicity CareerHub".

“Without this platform, it’s basically impossible to keep on top of data or it would be very manual and time-consuming to do so. The complexity of our services are rich and our data needs are paramount, making platforms like Symplicity CareerHub absolutely critical.”

The adoption and impact of Symplicity CareerHub

The platform's configurable analytics and reporting capabilities have enabled the university to effectively support students by identifying their needs and goals. CareerHub has facilitated the seamless management of events, appointments and skill development activities, creating a personalised student journey and fostering student engagement. “I don't think there's anything that we don't use. We try to be as efficient as possible with using as much of the functionality as possible,” Kenyon told Symplicity.

City University previously relied on third-party technology for event check-in, but it proved to be costly and cumbersome to manage. When the system failed, Kenyon and her team faced the time-consuming task of manually checking in students. Fortunately, CareerHub's built-in check-in feature eliminated these headaches, ensuring a smooth and efficient process for future events.

City's career readiness resources are accessible to students around the clock through CareerHub, catering to the busy schedules of its student body, many of whom commute or work. Kenyon highlights the platform's flexibility, "We can segment appointments for specific student groups and ensure appointments across different campuses are visible only to relevant students."

“We make a lot of use of CareerHub's workflow system, especially for managing our micro placements program. We also rely on the Talent module for managing micro placements. We use the appointment booking system, events and check-in feature and are integral parts of our operations. We've incorporated the Skills module for our graduate attributes work and employability award. We try to be as efficient as possible with using as much of the functionality as possible.”

Advancing Symplicity CareerHub integration at City

City’s use of CareerHub is only expanding. City intends to merge with other student services to create as Kenyon told Symplicity, "a one-stop student services hub." Kenyon continues: "In the next 6 months,  we are discovering how CareersHub can be integrated with wider IT systems to create a seamless digital experience with those who are interacting with student services across City.” This will unify all student services under one roof to ensure City students get wrap-around, holistic support across their student lifecycle.

City's adoption of Symplicity's CareerHub has significantly transformed its career services, providing a centralised platform for students to access a wide range of opportunities and support. By leveraging the platform's capabilities, the university has been able to streamline its services, integrate various employability offerings and make data-informed decisions to enhance student outcomes. The implementation of CareerHub exemplifies City's commitment to providing a comprehensive and efficient career services experience for its students.

“I think the CareersHub advancements that we've made in the last few years have solved a number of problems for us as we've scaled our operation in a number of different areas. We need to offer 24/7 services for students and that's what the system provides. We've been able to segment appointments for different groups of students. CareerHub is the bedrock of our service. I'd say we couldn't run our service without having a CSMS like Symplicity CareerHub, we just couldn't do it.”
