UWE Bristol's commitment to career development

The University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) is a leader in student success, offering a comprehensive approach to career development. UWE Bristol empowers over 38,000 students from 140+ countries to achieve their professional goals. This dedication is evidenced by an impressive 90% graduate employability rate, with the majority of students securing jobs or pursuing further studies within 15 months of graduation.

Leading the charge in career readiness, is Colette Percival, Head of Careers and Enterprise at UWE Bristol. Under her guidance, UWE Bristol has established a comprehensive portfolio of career development initiatives, including work-based learning opportunities, strategic employer partnerships, global EDI programs and Student Ventures (a hub for aspiring entrepreneurs). Symplicity CareerHub was adopted in 2011 and has since revolutionised the way UWE Bristol's students and staff engage with career resources, fostering a more connected and efficient approach to career development.

Seamless integration across services

UWE Bristol uses CareerHub across a wide range of services, not just within the careers team. Customising the CareerHub system as “InfoHub,” UWE Bristol finds that it “indicates the breadth of how we use the system, right across our professional services—from counselling and student finance through to careers and enterprise," as Percival explained. The holistic nature of CareerHub at UWE Bristol allows multiple departments to leverage the platform, ensuring that students can access various services in one place.

This integration means that the careers team is not the sole beneficiary of the platform. While they are the largest users, other services, including student counselling and financial support, have found ways to utilise CareerHub's functionality, creating a one-stop-shop experience for students. Colette notes, "Students like the system; they like everything they can do in one place, which is really important."

Driving student engagement and employer partnerships

One of the key features that UWE Bristol has found most impactful is CareerHub's job sort functionality, allowing employers to post job opportunities directly into the system. "The self-serve nature of being able to add their own jobs and have that approved either through CareerHub Central or locally at UWE is really impactful for our users," said Colette. This feature significantly streamlines how employers engage with the university. Students benefit from being able to see a broad range of opportunities in one location. This level of access and convenience has helped drive student engagement and makes CareerHub a central resource for their career development journey.

“For students, being able to see such a breadth of jobs and opportunities—whether that's placements and internships or graduate jobs in one place—is really impactful. That often tends to be the hook that gets people in.”

A decade of partnership

UWE Bristol has used CareerHub since 2011 and have integrated the platform into its operations. For UWE Bristol, CareerHub has proven to be a flexible and impactful tool that supports the holistic needs of students, employers and staff alike, ensuring that the university remains at the forefront of career services innovation.

“You get out what you put in. It’s really important to build that knowledge and build that confidence with your staff and your students. The more you do that, the more you’ll get out of it.”
