Sustainability at Software Companies

It’s no secret that there are environmental impacts of hosting SaaS solutions.  Data centers, where the websites that we use everyday, can use an enormous amount of energy and cause carbon emissions.

Symplicity on AWS

In 2019, Symplicity moved from self-hosting all client solutions, to creating a Virtual Private Symplicity Cloud within the Amazon Web Service (AWS) Cloud Infrastructure.  This move to AWS lined up with sustainability goals for the company.  Our move enabled us to take advantage of the following facts:

  • Cloud Consumers Consume 84% Less Power
  • Cloud Consumers Consume 77% Fewer Servers
  • Cloud Customers Reduce Their Carbon Emissions by 88%

Symplicity is excited to be working with AWS to bring you your solutions.  AWS is focused on their long-term commitment to 100% renewable energy usage.  Currently, AWS is at 50% renewable energy usage.  We are committed to helping AWS bring that goal to fruition by continuing our partnership with them.

Symplicity sustainability is carried out by the employees that work here.  Company policy allows employees to take a half-day once per quarter to participate in volunteering or charitable events.  We also organize volunteer days on the weekends at homeless shelters, river cleanups on the Potomac River, and more.  Even the little things matter in this regard, so we encourage employees to use reusable (metal) spoons for our coffee, instead of plastic!  We participate in recycling programs and food drives.  Symplicity Headquarters is located in a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified building.  We’re proud at what we’ve accomplished in helping the environment and look forward for more opportunities to help out our community.
